Science and Technology Summer School

Since 2011, the University of Granada has played host to the Science and Technology Summer School, aimed at students from the last year of compulsory secondary education and the first year of the Baccalaureate, from throughout Spain. For the students this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the university, experience first-hand various different scientific methods, and acquire new knowledge, by taking part in a practical research project. The Summer School this year ran from 2nd to 28th July, welcoming four groups in total, one per week.

The initiative, which is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the Spanish National Science and Technology Foundation (FECYT), and the charitable arm of the ‘La Caixa’ bank, offered participants the chance to get involved with one of four science-based projects:

  • Innovation and research into quality of life, health and sport
  • ICT and knowledge: building the future together
  • Applying mathematics to science and technology
  • Chemistry using every-day natural products.

The projects were delivered and supported by teaching staff from various different departments, secondary school teachers, and specialist technical staff from local companies and the university itself.

Participants also enjoyed leisure activities throughout the week, such as a visit to the Alhambra Palace in Granada, an excursion to the Sierra Nevada mountains, a twilight tour of the traditional Albaicín neighbourhood and the city centre, and swimming and sports activities at the UGR’s own facilities. The project was made possible thanks to the active participation of several of CIE BioTic’s strategic partners, including, amongst others, SoLei, Cetursa, Intelligenia, and the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife.
